VATICAN CITY, NOV. 6, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Karol Wojtyla´s life has been the subject of film and television productions. Now, the Pope is the star of a cartoon film.
Entitled "Wojtyla,» the 6-minute cartoon was conceived by Italian commercial artist Mario Verger. The film, which was presented at the most recent Genzano International Festival of Animated Cartoons, narrates the human and spiritual journey of John Paul II.
John Paul II is depicted praying in his private chapel, and recalling highlights of his life: his parents, the tragedies of his youth (Nazism and Communism), and some of the great moments of his pontificate (revelation of the secret of Fatima, beatification of Padre Pio, meetings with Mother Teresa of Calcutta).
Mario Verger told ZENIT that the film is a homage to the Pontiff, aimed at both adults and adolescents. It is an attempt to bring the boys who will see the cartoon «closer to evangelical principles.»
«Wojtyla» offers «the most classical teaching: prayer, devotion to Mary and the rosary, invincible arms often little appreciated,» Verger said.
The author of the film said he decided to end the cartoon with the opening of the Holy Door, because it represents for him «the fullness of the efforts of this Pope expressed in a very symbolic manner, a truly important event for the world.»
