Monument in Ukraine to Commemorate Pope´s 2001 Visit

KIEV, Ukraine, JUNE 23, 2002 (Zenit.org).- A monument commemorating John Paul II´s 2001 visit to Ukraine is expected to be unveiled in the western city of Lviv.

The Vatican´s secretary for foreign relations, Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, arrived Saturday and is expected to meet with President Leonid Kuchma and Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko here before leaving for Lviv.

The archbishop will unveil the papal monument in the Lviv Archdiocese and meet Greek-Catholic and Roman Catholic Church representatives, according to news reports.

The Pope was in Ukraine from June 23-27, 2001, at the invitation of President Kuchma and Latin- and Eastern-rite Catholics, a minority of about 6 million in this predominantly Orthodox nation of 48 million inhabitants.
