New Archbishop Named for Monterrey, Mexico

MONTERREY, Mexico, JAN. 26, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed Francisco Robles Ortega, bishop of Toluca, Mexico, as metropolitan archbishop of Monterrey.

The new archbishop succeeds Cardinal Antonio Suárez Rivera, who is retiring.

Francisco Robles was born in Mascota on March 2, 1949. Ordained a priest in July 1976 by the Diocese of Autlan, he earned a licentiate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.

He was appointed auxiliary of Toluca in 1991, and bishop in June 1996.
