Archbishop Silvestre Luís Scandian, 72, of Vitoria, was attacked Thursday night in his office, a Church spokesman Carlos Magno said. The archbishop was treated overnight at a hospital and released Friday.

Police arrested Robinson Santana, a 50-year-old physical education teacher, who had booked an appointment to meet with the archbishop, and attacked him during the encounter, Magno said.

Santana apparently was mentally disturbed, said Magno. But the Church wants a full investigation, he said.
