New Bishop Named for Eparchy of Stamford for Ukrainians

WASHINGTON, D.C., JAN. 6, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Paul Chomnycky, apostolic exarch for Byzantine-rite Ukrainians residing in Great Britain, as head of the Eparchy of Stamford for Ukrainians.

Bishop Chomnycky, 51, will succeed Bishop Basil Losten, 75, whose resignation was accepted by the Pope.

The Holy Father also appointed Monsignor John Bura, pastor of St. Nicholas Church, Wilmington, Delaware, as auxiliary bishop of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia for Ukrainians.

Paul Patrick Chomnycky was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was ordained to the priesthood in October 1988. He was appointed apostolic exarch for the Ukrainian faithful in the United Kingdom in April 2002.

The Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of Stamford was established in 1956. It has a total Catholic population of 16,600. The jurisdiction of the bishop of Stamford extends territorially through all of New York state and the New England states.

John Bura, the newly appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia for Ukrainians, was born in Wegeleben, Germany. His parents migrated to the United States in 1959.

He attended St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained in 1971.

He was rector of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary from 1987 to 1997.
