The site was launched officially last month by Archbishop Berhaneyesus Souraphiel of Addis Ababa, in the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat, a spokesman told the Catholic Information Service for Africa.

The new Web site, in English, offers general information on the Church and current news on the Pope. It includes profiles of Ethiopia’s 10 dioceses and summaries of the 169 country’s parishes.

On the site it is possible to download, in PDF, the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat Newsletter and to subscribe to Fikirna Selam, the monthly Catholic national newspaper, in English and in Amharic.

Almost half of the country’s 73 million inhabitants are Muslim. Orthodox represent about 35% of the population. Catholics account for less than 1%, though the Church has an active network of institutions.
