A native of Schiavon, Italy, Monsignor Parolin is replacing Monsignor Celestino Migliore, who was recently appointed permanent observer of the Vatican to the United Nations.

Until now, the new Vatican undersecretary was a nunciature consultor in the Vatican Department of Relations with States. The Vatican Press Office announced his appointment Saturday.

Pietro Parolin was born Jan. 15, 1955. A priest since 1980, Monsignor Parolin entered the Vatican diplomatic service in 1986 and worked in the papal representations of Nigeria and Mexico. He holds a licentiate in canon law.
