The ruling Social Democrats and their junior coalition partners, the Popular Party, voted today against bills proposed by left-wing parties which would allow abortion on demand up to the 12th week of pregnancy, and up to the 24th week in exceptional circumstances, Agence France-Presse reported.

The governing coalition also voted against a proposal to have a new referendum on the nation’s abortion laws, which only allow abortions until the 12th week of pregnancy in cases of rape or serious health risks.
