Pope Francis wishes for the United States, affected by tropical storm Harvey, which has devastated Texas and has now moved to Louisiana, “a vast outpouring of solidarity and mutual aid in the best traditions of the nation.”
In a telegram of condolences, made public on August 31, he assures his prayers for the victims, which to date could number some 30. Several hundred people are still unreachable.
The Pontiff assured his ”spiritual closeness” and his “pastoral concern” for all those affected by this hurricane, reads the message in English, signed by the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and addressed to Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston.
“Deeply moved” by the “tragic loss of life “ and by the “immense material devastation that this natural catastrophe has left in its wake,” the Holy Father prays “for the victims and their families, and for all those engaged in the vital work of relief, recovery and rebuilding.” The material damages are estimated to be 50 billion euros just for the State of Texas.
He also hopes that “the immense and immediate needs of so many individuals and communities” will inspire “a vast outpouring of solidarity and mutual aid in the best traditions of the nation. “
