(ZENIT News / Mexico City, 29.01.2025).- Days before leaving Mexico, Ken Salazar, the outgoing Ambassador of the United States, met with Monsignor Ramón Castro Castro, Bishop of Cuernavaca and President of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, whom he thanked for his work in favor of «shared security» in the country.
Ken Salazar ended his term as Ambassador on January 7 of this year, just days before Donald Trump took office as President of the United States.
The now former Ambassador said that the Bishops know the reality in Mexico’s communities and seek to collaborate in development and peace” “That’s why I met with Monsignor Ramón Castro Castro. I got to know in greater depth his perspective on the situation being lived by 12,000 priests in Mexico.”
Salazar attended Sunday Mass in Cuernavaca’s Cathedral in the center of the country, during the Feast of the Lord’s Epiphany, which was celebrated by Monsignor Castro Castro. After the celebration, the Prelate expressed, on the social networks, his appreciation of the Ambassador, describing him as a “Catholic man in love with Mexico,” and assuring that “we pray for him, for his family and all his plans.”
Ken Salazar manifested his closeness to the Mexican Episcopate during his time as Ambassador, from September 2021, adding himself to the Bishops’ position on the risks and problems of the judicial reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In 2024 he highlighted the reform as “a greater risk for the functioning of democracy in Mexico.”
After attending the Mass of the Lord’s Epiphany, the Ambassador said he talked with Monsignor Castro “about the solid ties between Morelos and the United States. We talked about the opportunities to work jointly in essential areas, such as the security and prosperity of our nations. We also agreed on the importance of fostering academic and cultural exchanges, as I’m convinced that education and mutual understanding help us to build a better future.”
And he reflected on joint work. “The dialogue between different sectors enables us to deepen and broaden the efforts made by our countries to build together a more brilliant and more prosperous future for our nations.”
