Pope Francis has sent a message to the meeting between a Delegation from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, led by Cardinal Luis F. Ladaria, SJ, Prefect, and Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia, O.P., Adjunct Secretary, and the Presidents of the Doctrinal Commissions of the Episcopal Conferences of Asia which is to take place at the Baan Phu Waan Pastoral Center in Bangkok, Thailand from January 15-18, 2019.
In the message, the Holy Father acknowledged they are gathered in the “vast and multifarious continent” of Asia marked by religious, linguistic and cultural diversity, “for the purpose of reaffirming our common responsibility for the unity and integrity of the Catholic faith, as well as to explore new means and methods to bear witness to the Gospel amidst the challenges of our contemporary world.”
The Holy Father recalled that in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, he invited the whole Church ‘to go forth’.
“I am happy to know that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, taking into account the importance of the Episcopal Conferences and especially their Doctrinal Commissions, reaches out to the Pastors of the Church in Asia to foster effective cooperation and fraternal exchange.”
Before imparting his blessing on the meeting’s participants, the Successor of Peter expressed his prayer “that this meeting may offer an opportunity to address some concerns pertaining to the Gospel of Jesus Christ which are specific and relevant to Asia.”
In an Instruction dated 23 February 1967, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, at the behest of Saint Pope Paul VI, asked the Bishops’ Conferences to establish their own Doctrinal Commissions within the Conferences, as a consultative body assisting the Conferences themselves, and the individual bishops, in their concern for faith and morality. In certain situations where this may be difficult, this essential pastoral task can be assumed by another Commission, or by a singular bishop who follows doctrinal problems with particular attention.
To strengthen the collaboration between the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Doctrinal Commissions of the Episcopal Conferences, in 1982 the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger decided that the Presidents of such Commissions should meet periodically at a continental level. One of the original characteristics of these meetings lies in the fact that the Superiors of the Congregation go to the different continents, thereby underlining the importance of the local and regional jurisdictions and their responsibility in addressing doctrinal issues. The first of these meetings took place in Latin America, in Bogatá (1984); there were subsequent meetings in Kinshasa, Africa (1987); in Vienna, Europe (1989); in Hong-Kong, Asia (1993); in Guadalajara, Latin America (1996), and in San Francisco, North America (1999). In more recent times, meetings took place in Dar es Salaam, Africa (2009) and in Esztergom-Budapest, Europe (2015).
Now, in collaboration with the Presidency of the Federation of the Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), a new meeting of the same kind has been prepared for Asia. Such an event manifests the desire of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to support the local Episcopates in their responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the doctrine of the faith, considering the specific challenges that face the continent of Asia today.
Here is the Vatican-provided text of the Holy Father’s message to the participants in the meeting:

***
Dear Brothers in the Episcopate,
On the occasion of the meeting of the Presidents of Doctrinal Commissions of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, taking place in Bangkok from 15 to 18 January 2019 with the participation of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, I cordially send you my fraternal greetings.
You gather together from across this vast continent that is marked by religious, linguistic and cultural diversity, in order to reaffirm our common responsibility for the unity and integrity of the Catholic faith and to explore new ways and methods of bearing witness to the Gospel amid the challenges of our contemporary world.
In the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I invited the whole Church “to go forth”. I am pleased that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is actively supporting the important work of the Episcopal Conferences and especially of their Doctrinal Commissions, as they assist and foster the effective and fraternal cooperation among the Pastors of the Church in Asia.
Praying that this meeting may offer an opportunity to address the concerns of the Gospel that are specific and relevant to Asia, to all those taking part I gladly impart my blessing.
From the Vatican, 10 January 2019.
FRANCIS
