Canadian Is Named Secretary for Catholic Education

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 25, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed Canadian Father Michael Miller, the president of St. Thomas Aquinas University in Texas, as secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education.

Father Miller is replacing Archbishop Giuseppe Pittau, who resigned for reasons of age.

With the appointment, the Pope decided that Father Miller be consecrated bishop of the titular see of Vertara, with the dignity of archbishop.<br>
Born in Ottawa in 1946, Michael Miller entered the Congregation of St. Basil. He was ordained a priest in 1975.

He earned a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in 1979. Father Miller has been professor of dogmatic theology at St. Thomas Aquinas University (1979-1987), and an official of the Vatican Secretariat of State (1992-1997). He has been president of St. Thomas Aquinas University since 1997.
