Pope Francis to go to Indonesia: government of the world’s most Muslim country announces date

(ZENIT News / Rome, 04.02.2024).- Through the Minister for Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Quomas, the Indonesian government confirmed Pope Francis’s visit to the country in a statement dated March 30, 2024. The announced visit is scheduled for September 3 of the same year and only includes the capital, Jakarta.

According to local press, the Pope is visiting Indonesia, en route to Timor, at the invitation of President Joko Widodo, who reportedly invited him in June 2022. The Jakarta diocese also confirmed the date, although a “more official” announcement will be made on April 8.

Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world: 242 million Muslims, with only 8.5 million Catholics.

This trip for September 2024 also includes Papua New Guinea, in addition to Timor. The trip was planned for 2022 but could not be carried out due to health reasons.
