Mayor Walter Veltroni will confer an honorary citizenship on the Polish Pope on Oct. 31, the newspaper La Repubblica reported.

The Vatican Press Office said Sunday that the final details of the ceremony have yet to be organized, but it is probable that the mayor, a former Communist, will give the Holy Father the keys of the Eternal City during an audience in the Vatican.

John Paul II has personally assumed the responsibility of Bishop of Rome, visiting some 300 parishes.

The Holy Father is assisted in his pastoral care of the diocese by his vicar, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, whom he appointed.
