CARACAS, Venezuela, AUG. 3, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The archbishop of Caracas today appealed to security authorities to do something about the recent wave of violence against Catholic churches in the capital.
Cardinal Ignacio Velasco questioned the attitude of some officials, such as Luis Miquilena, Minister of the Interior and Justice, “who categorize the attacks on the churches as … of little importance.”
Over the past week, four Catholic churches were the targets of explosive attacks. On Wednesday, a low-intensity device exploded in a confessional in St. Francis Church, near the National Assembly, slightly injuring two people.
Another explosive was discovered Thursday in the Church of Guadalupe, located in the Las Mercedes housing estate.
“It is necessary to understand that the situation is serious,” Cardinal Velasco said. He also said that the Church would study the measures proposed by Major Mayor Alfredo Peña, responsible for the security of the five municipalities that make up the capital city.
