The Synodal Council, already banned by the Pope in January 2023, had the mission of constituting itself as a consultative and decision-making body capable of making decisions above the dioceses and thus supplanting the personal authority of each bishop in the entrusted territory. The letter of three cardinals on behalf of the Pope managed to stop what would have been a de facto schism or at least a serious act of disobedience.
